Skytown welcomes parent involvement on many levels, from assisting teachers in the classroom to making play dough, to serving on our Board of Directors. Parents have the option to be as involved in their child’s education as their time and resources allow. Buying out of all or some of family commitments is possible.
A parent participates in the classroom as an assistant teacher. All participants are required to arrive on time for the “participation meeting” at 8:45, supervise and clean up their assigned areas until approximately 1:00. Sometimes parents will be asked to perform special duties like spearhead a classroom project or observe specific children.
There are a variety of ways for families to participate and contribute to the school. All families are required to take part in the maintenance and operation of the school as part of the cooperative philosophy. They can choose an administrative job or a more hands-on job such as giving tours to prospective families. They can also serve on the Board of Directors. Each family job is vital and helps to keep the school running efficiently. Certain administrative positions, such as board chairs, have more responsibilities and may receive tuition benefits.
* Buyout is available.
Memberships meetings are held the second Monday of every month from 7:00-9:00p.m. At least one family member must attend. Whenever possible, we encourage the family member who participates in the classroom to attend the meetings. Classroom dynamics, policies and activities are sometimes discussed and it makes more sense for the participating parent to attend. The purpose of the meetings is multi-faceted. They provide a forum for members to participate in the running of the school, friendships and community, parenting support, and new tools for effectively participating in the classroom.
Families are required to complete three work party hours per semester (Sept.-Jan.; Feb.-June).
Families attending during the summer are also required to attend a Summer work party.
* Buyout is available.
In order to run and the school and keep tuition low each family is required to contribute eight hours to fund-raising and/or outreach projects during the academic year. There is also a monthly scrip obligation that can be easily met through a family’s usual purchases.
* Buyout is available.
* “Buyout is available” means that families may choose to pay a fee in lieu of participating in a specific activity.
