Floor Paintings

Last week Seba dumped paint on the outside cement and stated, “I want to paint the ground”; paper was immediately taped to the ground to facilitate this new dimension. Today, we placed paper on the floor inside and let the emergent experience run! The only limit was making sure the paint went on our paper or our bodies. If paint was placed on the floor we made sure to clean it up with wipes provided near the experience.
The children were provided with 2 different primary colors in each tray and paintbrushes. During the experience, Seba discovered, “I have yellow and blue paint. Oh, and I have green too!”
Zinnia painted both her hands and feet, exploring other forms of application and how they look on the paper. This sparked Neil to bring a car and use that as a way to apply paint to the paper. He discovered that the car made two lines, “It is train track,” he said

What happens to the water in the container if you drop a ball into it over and over again? Well, it turns out it splashes and splashes. Also good for laughs in case anyone wants to try it. Try catching the ball with a small shovel and it increases the laughter and the physical discoveries.

Apples and Oranges

This circle time idea came from Carver. One day we were outside talking about balance. We explored a few things and he asked if apples could be balanced on heads. I said we could try it and find out and I promised to buy the apples. We tried balancing apples and oranges (because I decided to add a different challenge.) Predictably, the older kids did better at the activity but kids of all ages participated and we all had some good laughs and “discovered’ that apples are easier to balance because they have a bigger flatter part to sit on our heads. Afterwards we cut up the fruit and used it to make fruit prints, because we decided together that bruised fruit might not be tasty to eat.

Let’s Try a Different Way

PJ decided that there must be a different way to put shoes on. He felt maybe people had not given this issue enough thought. He engaged Che in this and they proceeded to attempt various ways to put shoes on their feet. They shared many ideas and laughs along the way. In the end they acknowledged that the traditional way was the most comfortable and put their shoes back on and moved onto something else together.
It was a most interesting theory to test and they went about it quite methodically.

Toddler Balance

This day the toddlers were having fun exploring their balance. They were laughing and encouring each other as they practiced an important skill. They had Amy Waxman (Maddy’s mom) with them as they learned about using their arms to help them stay on their balance beam.

Boxes

The boxes the new toddler playhouse came in where a great new toy for both toddlers and preschoolers. They made houses and boats with them, they decorated them, kicked them, hid under them, and explored how to make new and different shapes with them. The boxes tore and were put back together with tape, staples, twine and glue. The process was filled with learning and the products they created were fun to play with and in. The children used a great deal of compromising , problem solving, and shared learning.

Musical expression

Neil (Owen and Kate Ramos’ dad) brought his key board to share with the children. The whole school was able to particpate by taking turns in the office. They sang into the microphone, played on the keyboards, and heard their music played back to them as well. The cause and effect of using the keyboards was immediate.

Three pirates

These three pirates requested their picture be taken and simply wanted people to know about them. They had fun looking for people to capture and running around for a good part of the morning.
